World Cup 2026: The Breakout Prospects Preparing for Their Global Breakthrough

World Cup 2026 is right around the corner, and the anticipation is climbing day by day. This year’s competition is on track to be one of the biggest yet. More countries. More games. More football.
Although it is said at every World Cup, this year’s really does feel like the end of an era for some of the biggest names in international football. For the likes of Messi, Ronaldo and Neymar, it must surely be their last World Cup in addition to many other huge names. Although the torch can already be classed as “passed down” to the likes of Yamal and Mbappe, there are still a lot of up-and-coming talents looking to break onto the scene.
This article will highlight just a couple of these talents who are preparing to really take to the stage. Throughout, I will provide a data-driven rundown, including statistical charts and visualisations that demonstrate their capabilities and potential.
Kerim Alajbegović
First up is 18-year-old Bosnia and Herzegovina international winger Kerim Alajbegović. The young winger has been enjoying his first “real” season with RB Salzburg in the Austrian Bundesliga, cementing himself in the first team on the left wing. Having been sold from Bayer Leverkusen to the Austrian side in the summer, he has established himself as a bright attacking outlet, so much so that Leverkusen have already decided to trigger the buy-back clause in his contract. Whilst having initially been sold to Salzburg for €2.00m, the recently triggered predetermined fee of €8.00m demonstrates how much he has impressed for the Austrian side.
Whilst only making his international debut in September, he has had some opportunities to impress for his nation, which I would say he has done. A goal and 2 assists in 7 appearances (2 starts) is a very accomplished return for such a young winger. Clearly, the manager feels the same way with Alajbegović playing a big part in their World Cup Playoffs, racking up 133/240 minutes played as well as being trusted to take (and score) a pen in both penalty shootouts.
Just how statistically influential is this young winger, though? Kerim is an extremely technically gifted winger who relies less on his dribbling ability but rather has self-belief in his end product. With superb shooting ability and a keen eye for goal, he is not someone who shies away from a shot outside the box. But in fairness, if you could hit a strike as he does, why not have a shot from distance?

As can be seen in the data above, he is a player who is technically gifted with a high output of goals and scoring opportunities. With 8 big chances created and 30 key passes in 20 games, we see a player who is far more selfless than his shooting stats represent. These numbers put him in the very top echelon of creative players in the Austrian Bundesliga alongside players who have been doing it for far more seasons, not just in their breakout year. A standout statistic must be his crosses, of which he has racked up 119 in 20 games (5.95pg), demonstrating a winger who is not afraid to put the ball somewhere dangerous and give the opportunity for the striker to get his goal. Whilst not always effective, as seen by just 4 assists from 8 big chances, his general overload of these attacking numbers will bring more success than not. With such a high output of chances created and shots taken on, his goal involvements will stay at such a high level, which will be the difference between winning and losing.
Whilst not being a guaranteed starter for his country just yet, as the tournament goes on and we see the need for players to take their moments and be that difference off the bench, he has all the right qualities to be a standout. With a very workable group (Canada, Qatar and Switzerland), Bosnia and Herzegovina will have their eyes set on a minimum of the round of 32, and hopefully Alajbegović will get his time to shine.
Pavel Šulc
Next up is someone who can only be described as a late bloomer. Obviously, nowhere near the likes of Jamie Vardy late, however, 25-year-old Czech international Pavel Šulc took his time getting to the top and now looks like he belongs. Lyon’s number 10 and current Czech Footballer of the Year made around 150 appearances for former side Viktoria Plzeň before being signed by Lyon. Since signing for Lyon, he has been nothing short of a sensation. In his first season in top European football, he has become his club's top league goal scorer and registered 17 goals and assists in 27 appearances (17 Starts).

As seen in the above table, he has rivalled some of the best football has to offer and is offering such a high standard of football, which helped his team to a Champions League qualification place. Furthermore, he has now established himself as a must-start for his national side. Czechia fans have described him as the epitome of their golden generation and hope that he can pave the way for future Czechia success.
With a goal conversion rate of 25% in the league, Šulc has proven how clinical he can be. However, this is just one aspect of his game which is impressive. He is someone who can play anywhere across the front line but is known to do his best work in the 10. He is someone who works extremely hard off the ball, as proven by his defensive contributions. Attempting 5 ground duels per game (42% success rate) and completing 2.5 tackles & recoveries, he puts a shift in when trying to win the ball back and is not scared off putting himself about. This is proven even more at the international level, where these numbers double and then some. In terms of ground duels, he still has a 41% success rate; however attempts 11.5 duels per game in addition to making 6.4 tackles and recoveries per game.
Due to the Czechia formation, his role becomes less of an attacking threat and becomes much more of a defender’s nightmare. He becomes someone who simply makes the opposition struggle in possession and can pick up the loose balls. Thanks to the likes of Patrik Schick and Tomáš Souček, there is no need for him to be a box threat or make those

late runs into the box. He is there to be a nuisance and create room for others in the box. Not only that, but also an aid to the wingbacks; therefore, there is a need to track back. This is proved in his most recent game against Italy, where we can see his heat map. He patrols across the entirety of the final 3rd pressing the opposition, and as can be seen in the final 3rd, he does a lot of tracking back. This will be so important during the World Cup, where the need for defensive competency against the big scorers (France, Spain, etc) will be vital. The likelihood is, Czechia will not outscore many opponents, meaning offensive players like Šulc, who can do the dirty work as well as be a threat, will be so important.
This is going to be a huge tournament for Pavel Šulc as he looks to drive his nation to the knockout rounds and solidify himself as a Czechia great.
Yan Diomande
Last and certainly not least is Côte d'Ivoire's 19-year-old winger Yan Diomande. This player really is something special, as proven by the biggest clubs in Europe ready to spend heavy amounts of money on him. The young winger has been the brightest spark in a youthful but exciting RB Leipzig side. At the start of the season, RB Leipzig were set the tough task of getting themselves back into Europe, which was hard enough without losing their 2 star men in Sesko and Simons before a ball had been kicked. The need to rejuvenate their attack became even more prominent, and in preparation for these losses, they invested heavily. Bringing in a plethora of young talents, they had a clear transfer policy, and one of the biggest signings was this man, Diomande. For a fee of €20million, Diomande was an expensive risk given he had previously only played in 10 games for his then club Leganés; however, it is safe to say he has more than paid back the trust he was given. 20 goal involvements in 33 league games have got him on the radar of some of Europe’s best, and meant he played a huge part in RB Leipzig’s success and eventual 3rd place finish.

As seen in the comparison with some of the best attackers in the Bundesliga (minus Bayern Munich), he has been a standout attacker this season, surpassing the numbers of top-level forwards. Having created 15 big chances this season, this is 6 better than the next best in the league, showcasing his creative and technical ability. These 15 big chances created put him 4th out of all attackers in the Bundesliga, only behind the outrageous Bayern trio. Additionally, his 8 assists rank him joint 5th in the entire league, and 12 goals put him joint 8th in the rankings. Combined, he ranks as the 6th best player in the league for attacking output (3rd without Kane, Olise and Diaz). These metrics demonstrate just how successful a season he has had in his breakout year, as well as earning himself a call-up to his national team.
With Côte d'Ivoire, he was given a starring role as they attempted to win the African Cup of Nations. Unfortunately, it wasn’t to be as they bowed out in the quarterfinals to Egypt. Though Diomande did not disappoint, getting himself a goal as well as producing 10 key passes in 4 starts alongside 1 big chance creation and 19 successful dribbles (ranked 1st in AFCON for this metric). All this planting him firmly in SofaScore’s team of the tournament and leading Côte d'Ivoire to be somewhat of a dark horse for this World Cup.
For his national side, he is asked to play on the opposite side of the attack. With Leipzig, he is a classic RW, a right-footed eccentric winger who is more than willing to create for the man in the middle as well as opportunities for himself. However, for Côte d'Ivoire, his role becomes more of an inverted left winger, cutting inside yet still required to create opportunities for the striker. This can dampen his game slightly due to it being unnatural, although even with a slightly lower level on offer, he is still one of the most exciting prospects in World football. Trusted to stay high up the pitch, there is a lot of faith in the 19-year-old. Faith will undoubtedly be repaid as he comes to showcase the peak of his ability at the World Cup 2026.
Wrap Up
Every one of these players has something to showcase at this World Cup, and all will inevitably be in the forefront of a lot of scouts’ minds coming into this tournament. Another player to mention as well is 17-year-old Gilberto Mora, who will be a top creative spark for the Mexican National team. Once becoming the youngest debutant in Mexican history, he has been scouted and tapped up by some of the very best clubs. Unfortunately, there is no guarantee of fitness and minutes coming into the World Cup as he recovers from a groin injury. Should there be a slight chance of full fitness, however, it is guaranteed that he will step up to represent his country.
